Warning signs
Drawn from the recognised clinical criteria. The more that apply, the more seriously they warrant attention.
- Returning another day to win back losses (chasing) — the most characteristic sign
- Needing larger stakes for the same excitement
- Preoccupation with past or future sessions
- Repeated failed attempts to cut down or stop
- Restlessness or irritability when trying to stop
- Gambling when anxious, low or under stress rather than for entertainment
- Concealing the extent of play from people close to you
- Relying on others for money because of gambling losses
- Risking a relationship, job or studies
Tools that work
The principle: the decision must be made in advance and be hard to reverse mid-session.
- Self-exclusion — the strongest available tool, because it cannot be undone on impulse.
- Deposit limits set in advance, where increases carry a cooling-off delay.
- A separate bank account funded once a month — a hard external ceiling that works even where a platform offers no tools.
- Removing saved payment details — friction at the point of deposit is protective.
- Blocking software on phone and computer.
- Telling one person — concealment is what allows escalation to continue.
- Never using reverse withdrawal. Ask for it to be disabled if the option exists.

Our conflict of interest
This site earns commission when readers register with gambling operators, which gives us a direct financial interest in your playing. Publishing a responsible gaming page without saying that would be dishonest.
Nothing on this site is advice to gamble. Adults only, 18+. If anything here has encouraged you to play more than you intended, please contact one of the services above — their only interest is your wellbeing.
